The Meaning Behind the Team Name: Penicillin
During WWII, West Chester, PA, was the center of Penicillin production. The discovery of Penicillin started with an accident – Alexander Fleming realizing his petri dishes were contaminated by nearby bacteria. But it took much more than a lucky accident in 1928. Fleming has given up his research, unable to extract the mold’s active substance. When war broke out in 1939, Oxford scientists started research based on Fleming’s article. By 1943, penicillin production became the U.S. war department’s #2 priority. Eventually, clinical trials took place across the U.S. to further prove the effectiveness of the drug, 15 drug companies participated in one of health care’s most important advancements.
